Inspection of the German School by the relevant German School Authorities

"BLI" - November 2010

From the 8th to the 12th of November 2010 two inspectors from Germany, Mr. Niebling and Ms. Schröder-Klein, observed and evaluated the lessons of the entire teaching staff. On Monday the 8th, the inspectors had a meeting with the German Ambassador to Kenya, Ms. Margit Hellwig-Boette. The school compound and classrooms were closely inspected, interviews were carried out with representatives of all the different bodies of the school community, and 5 thick files containing thousands of documents relating to the German School Nairobi were looked through! Never, since the founding of the school 40 years ago, has it ever had such an extensive inspection!

In the table below, we present an overview of the results that were presented on Friday. "4" is the best mark possible. "1" means this criterion requires a more focused evaluation, as well as re-inspection of that particular weakness. Our school, however, was far from this "1"! The excellence seal is awarded when the average achieved is above 2.5, and 5 of the most important criteria have a minimum of a "3". As none of these 5 criteria were below "3", even those mathematically challenged need to do no calculations!

The ground work for this school inspection, which was introduced as part of a school development process, has been going on for 4 years.  It has required substantial input and a great deal of commitment from teachers, students, parents and the Headmaster. Since the beginning of the academic year, the former and current PQM coordinators worked for several weeks on collecting and preparing the documentation required by the inspectors. All these documents were sent to Germany for checking well ahead of the inspection.

In May 2011 the school was officially awarded the seal of an "Excellent School Abroad" by the German Ambassador to Kenya. In the academic year 2011/2012 the action plan according to the BLI results was set in motion. The next round to establish the planned measures has already started and will be continued in 2013.
