News Flash from the AGM on 26 October 2016

  • The AGM approved the accounts and activities of the Board and discharged the Board from liability.
  • 3 new board members have been elected: Marita Dieling, Ilja Burchard und Andreas Flückiger.
  • Ahmad Al Hammal, Caroline Nansubuga-Bredt, Frank Hinrichs, Almut van Casteren and Volker Renckstorf-Hayden are remaining in office.
  • Duncan Gatoto und Tim Bernhardt were elected as new internal auditors.
  • 1 new Trustee has been elected: Roberto Marini. Irene Muwanda, Daniela Pleitz. And Anja Wekesa remain in office.
  • Key areas of concern were discussed in depth (related to procedures for billing/deptors, financial/operations management, cafeteria, access to tennis / swimming pool and school buses) which the board highlighted as priority areas for 2016/2017
  • Ms Fixen-Zahn has taken over the responsibility of Academic and Advice
  • The BLI (external school inspection) will take place from the 7th to the 11th November 2016
  • The Guidelines for continuous assessment and oral presentations (GFS) have been revised and standardized
  • Ther numbers of our students in the Kindergarten, in the Primary- and Secondary School are increasing
  • The School and the security officers at the Embassy have established an Emergency and Crisis Plan for the school
  • Futher Cooperation with external Partners: University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Goethe Institut, the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the German Business Assoication (GBA).

From 408 members of the German School Society, only 44 voters were present (52 were needed to reach a quorum).

For this reason, the Annual General Meeting had to be rescheduled to Wednesday, 26 October 2016, 19:00.

  • Vote: Increase of the annual fees for school and Kindergarten by 9%, increase of the bus fees by 7.5% and increase of the Lunch subscriptions by 10 Euro per year (from 390 Euros to 400 Euros)
  • Cooptation by Volker Renckstorf-Hayden to the board (As successor to Uwe Koppel)
  • Vote: 2nd treasurer Mrs Simone Stransky
  • Vote: Confirmation of the decision of the board members to close the boarding house in its current state latest till December 2016 (This means, no accommodation for pupils for the new school year 2016/2017)

News Flash from the board meeting of 27 April 2015

  • The Board approved a number of contracts extensions.
  • The board approved the employment of a new primary school teacher, Mrs Budke. Mrs Budke will take on the role of Mrs Winterhof who is no longer able to join the school due to private reasons.
  • Mr Stigler, our head of administration, will be leaving the school at the end of the school year. We thank him for all his hard work
  • The next general meeting will take place on Tuesday, 26.5.2015 at 6pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

  • It was decided to employ a qualified social education worker called Andreas Wentland starting in April 2015.

News Flash from the AGM on 28 October 2014

  • The activities of the school board were approved by the members of the GSN at the general meeting last Tuesday.
  • Five new board members were elected: Jessica May, Julia Mielke, Lars Kühne, Jan Willem van Casteren and Betti Wachuga. The members also approved Katharina Gericke-Fuchs as a Board Member. She was coopted earlier in the year. The particular positions these will take will be announced shortly.
  • The following Auditors were elected: Mr Locknitz (new applicant) and Mr Calice (re-elected).
  • The following trustees were re-elected: Frau Rundgren und Herr Meinzingen.

News Flash from the board meeting of 13 October 2014

  • The library is now fully staffed again. We welcome Mrs Mwangi-Hartmann to the DSN and Mrs Ewa Kühne will read for the kindergarten and lead the library workshop for primary school with the main topics “Library and Research” (Bibliothekswerkstatt).
  • The internal and external audit of the DSN has been completed. 
  • A proposal for the increase of school fees from 2015 to 2018 was discussed and agreed to by the Board. This will be presented and discussed at the General Meeting on October 28th 2014. 
  • The next PA/FA Meeting and the next Board Meeting will be moved to Monday, November 24th (PA/FA) and to Monday, 01.12 (Board Meeting). The Inaugural Board Meeting will also be moved to Monday, November 10th at 6pm.

News Flash from the board meeting of 30 June 2014

The following decisions were made at the last Board Meeting of the academic year:

  • Joyce Muthoni will be employed as a teacher in the Primary School in the new academic year teaching English and Music.
  • Additionally, Felix Forster will join the Secondary school in the new academic year to teach Mathematics and Vocational Studies (Arbeitslehre).
  • The position of PR and Marketing will become a full-time position from September and Ms Wilken will undertake more duties in the marketing area.

The Board wishes all teachers, parents, students and employees relaxing holidays.

News Flash from the board meeting of 26 May 2014

  • The board agreed to increase the number of staff for special needs children, particularly in the field of speech therapy and reading and spelling weakness.
  • In addition to approving several contract renewals for teaching staff, the board also agreed to employ an additional French teacher.
  • It was agreed to increase the staff in the Kindergarten. There will be three new staff members, two of which will be responsible for the newly created toddler group.
  • The board discussed the administration concept that was developed by a parent-group for the restructuring of the school's administration. The first concrete steps to be taken are currently being finalized and planned.
  • In addition, the board supports the implementation of new payment regulations, which will be voted on at the extraordinary general meeting.

News Flash from the board meeting of 31 March 2014

  • The reconstruction of the cafeteria is approved.
  • Music teacher Everett Igobwawill covers the lessons of the immediate previous music teacher until the end of this school term.
  • Nearly all teachers/staff has been recruited for next school year.
  • The kindergarten will receive another room for next school year to host the 3rd Toddler-group (bi-lingual).

News Flash from the board meeting of 24 February 2014

  • Michaela Wilken, currently the librarian, takes over the position for PR & Marketing from Stefanie Thomas. Mrs Wilken will assume her new position by 15 March 2014, which allows for a 2 week transition period until Mrs Thomas leaves the school by end of March.
  • Following the recommendation of the German Embassy the German School Nairobi refrains for the time being from applying for pupils' passes. In conjunction with other international schools the German School Nairobi explores possibilities of being granted exemption from this requirement by the Kenyan Authorities.
  • Mr Boddenberg participates in the meeting of headmasters of  German Schools abroad which takes place from 4 June - 7 June 2014 in Berlin.

News Flash from the board meeting of 27 January 2014

  • The library will be digitalised: The Board has decided to digitalise the entire contents of the library, so that it makes borrowing and lending easier. It is estimated that the data will be read in by the end of June.
  • Security precautions at the school will be further improved. The Board has decided to install CCTV cameras at the entrances of the school. The financing of this will be supported by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • The Board is also trying to deal with the issue of non-payment of school fees in full by several members of the society. Even at the end of the school year, there is a deficit of tens of thousands of Euros. Accordingly, the Board will be approaching these defaulters once again.
  • The employment of Rodgers Sasaka as IT-Coordinator of the GSN has been approved. Stefanie Birichi has been appointed Deputy Head of Kindergarten as of February 2014. The search for a successor on the PR/Marketing position which will be vacant with effect from April 2014 has already been started.

  • Introduction and welcome of Mr Martin Falk as the new liaison person for the school and the German Embassy
  • Approval of hiring Rachel Ng'ang'a and Eunice Mutula as Kindergarten assistants
  • Approval of hiring R. Böheim and S. Leopold to cover Biology and Chemistry lessons until the Autumn break

News Flash from the board meeting of 01 July 2013

  • Receipt of the forensic audit results on the boarding house and the cafeteria which was carried out by external auditors.
  • Resolution on the employment of new teachers, see circular letter No 3 from Mr. Boddenberg
  • Employment of Michaela Wilken who will be running the school's library effective from the new academic year. Welcome to the team!
  • Approval of a new concept to establish a "German School Swim Center" which is supposed to start at the beginning of the new academic year.

 

News Flash from the board meeting of 29 April 2013

  • The Board has decided there should be a forensic audit in the Boarding House and cafeteria area. The audit will be carried out in May / June.
  • The Board will discuss the budget for the academic year 2013 / 14, as well as the possible fee increment, in preparation for the AGM in May.
  • Several urgent investments that have been postponed in the past will be dealt with shortly, such as getting new chairs for the cafeteria, and the reconstruction of the Music Room.

 

News Flash from the board meeting of 18 March 2013

  • A strategy meeting of School Board and School Management has been scheduled for the 20th of April 2013.
  • The Board has dealt with the application of additional funds for school and teaching materials. The Federal Republic of Germany supports this need by providing 50% of the costs.
  • The request made by the AEM Hostel (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Evangelikaler Missionen) to become members of the German School Society has been approved.
  • A work group for the further development of our Boarding House has been set up.
  • A new teacher has been found as a replacement for Christine Sachse in the Giraffe Group in the Kindergarten: Ms Astrid Weddige will take the position of the Group Assistant till the summer holidays. Karibu!

 

News Flash from the board meeting of 25.02.2013

  • In its meeting on 25th February, the board approved the employment of Ms. Jennifer Kerstan as school social worker. Ms. Kerstan takes up her duties on April 15.
  • The board gave its formal blessing to the establishment of the German School Football Centre. The centre has already attracted more than 60 children to its Saturday morning training sessions, and has played its first round of friendly matches against ISK (for more information, see the sports section).
  • As part of efforts to improve the school's finances and services, the board reviewed ongoing work to renovate and upgrade the facilities at the boarding house.
  • Much of the meeting was taken up with preparations for the Feb. 26 Extraordinary General Meeting and with security measures related to the Kenyan elections.

 

News Flash from the board meetings of the 21.01, the 28.01 and the 01.02

  • Mr Rizwan Fazal from the finance task force, which is working on this year's budget as a priority, was invited to the Board meeting to present the results of what the task force has done so far.
  • The Board, upon recommendation of this task force, has decided to increase the Boarding fee for non-school boarders in two stages, as well as improve the quality of the Boarding House through short term investments, which should be completed by the end of March 2013.
  • The Board also decided that the purchase of a new bus designated in the budget be carried out by payment in instalments, so that these funds can be used for the Boarding House investments.
  • The employment of new persons was approved: Mr Ronald Klempt takes over Class 2 with immediate effect, and Ms Brigitte Lokudu has been at the school since the 1st of January as the school nurse. Ms Jennifer Kerstan will take on the new position of social educational worker from the 1st of April. A new bus driver, Mr Thadeus Muiruri has been employed, and Mr Daniel Mugura has been promoted to the post of Head of Transport.
  • The Board approves the additional costs for a surveyor who is supposed to finally clarify the plot boundary necessary for the new construction of the wall.
  • A short report on the success of the newly started Football Centre German School was welcomed.
  • A lot of time was spent on the preparation of the Extra-Ordinary AGM which will take place on the 26th of February.

 

News Flash from the board meeting of 26 November 2012

- The board returned to full strength by voting unanimously to co-opt Michael Koechig as its eighth member. Michael assumes the duties of deputy chair of the school's Finance Committee.

- Together with the German Embassy, the school has applied for financial support from the German Foreign Ministry for measures to strengthen security around the school compound. The ministry is expected to respond to the request quickly.

- The Finance Working Group considering the school's budgeting and fees held its first meeting on Nov. 22 and will re-assemble on Dec. 10. A second working group will work closely with the finance group on possible amendments and updates to the constitution of the school association.

- The tennis club got the go-ahead to install floodlights on our two courts so that play can continue into the evenings. The club expects to cover most of the cost through sponsorship and additional fees.

- Headmaster Boddenberg will personally represent the school at Didacta, the world's largest education fair, in Cologne in February.

- The school is initiating a specific audit of the construction of the kindergarten, as suggested by auditors at the annual meeting. External auditing firms will be invited to bid for the work.

News Flash from the board meeting of 29 October 2012

- vacation schedule for school year 2013/2014 has been ratified (and will appear on our webpage).

- creation of our yearbook with input from a student group has been discussed and endorsed.

- request by some kindergarten parents to offer a “half full-day” option has been discussed and rejected (see notice board at kindergarten).

- it has been agreed upon that a German electrician inspect the entire electrical system, in order to save electricity and to establish a map of all wiring, fuses and security switches.

- installation of a tracking system into our school busses, as planned for in the budget, has been ordered.
