Land Acquisition in Kenya: A top-class conference at the German School Nairobi

Date 06/02/2013

Any business in land is currently flourishing. More and more investors are buying fertile land in other countries. Particularly popular land: Africa. How can the African population benefit from this trend? That was the question that the participants of the conference tried to answer on the 30th of January at the Resource Centre of the German School Nairobi.

The organisers of the event were the Kiel Institute of the World Economy (ifw), the Leibniz German Institute of Global and Area studies, (based in Hamburg), GIGA, as well as the Christian-Albrecht-University in Kiel. Additionally, there were other members from related local authorities, including the Kenyan Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Lands, Dorothy Agote, the well-known Kenyan land rights activist, Odenga Lumumba and several other representatives from both the civil society, as well as research institutes. The exact title of the Workshop was, "Moving from Conjectures to Facts: Large-scale Land Acquisitions in Africa", and you can find the results of the workshop on GIGA Institute's website by clicking on http://www.giga-hamburg.de/english/index.php?file=rp_rt1_landnahme_en.html&folder=rp3

The conference members thanked the German School for its excellent organisation of the conference, and for looking after the guests so well - praise that we were obviously delighted to receive.
