Abitur Graduation Ceremony 2013

Date 31/05/2013

This year's Class 12 graduation ceremony took place in the Sports Hall, festively decorated by students of Class 10, and attended by numerous members of the school society, as well as other guests. Nine National Anthems marked the beginning of the ceremony, representing the different nationalities of the eleven graduates, and proving just how international the German School Nairobi is.

Lucas Alcamo, Olivia Bahm, Sofia Campuzano, Nicola Gelinek, Jonas Häggmark, Eliana Hörder, Nastassja Illi, Arjun Malhotra, Christopher Onoka, Maria Papathanasiou and Sidney Trompell are the first students at the school to have completed the German International Abitur (DIAP).

Timon and Malaika from Class 11 were excellent Masters of Ceremony, inviting several members of the audience to the stage to say a few words. The first to congratulate the graduates was Ms Hellwig-Bötte, the German Ambassador to Kenya. She wished the students luck and success in their future endeavours. This was followed by speeches from the Examinations Officer, Ms Schröder-Klein from KMK (and as Malaika explained, a very long word translates KMK into German: The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural affairs of the Laender in the Federal Republic of Germany!), the School Headmaster Mr Boddenberg, the Deputy Headmistress and Class Teacher of Class 12, Ms Ibe, followed by a few warm words from the Chairperson of the Board, Mr Stegen, and lastly, an amusing speech from Prof. Dr Alcamo, on behalf of the parents of the graduates. The student representatives of Class 12, Eliana Hörder and Lucas Alcamo then spoke about their experiences at the GSN, and thanked Ms Ibe for her dedicated supervision of the students during the last two years.

A casual touch was added to the rather elaborate programme with songs from Rachel and Njeri, and a hip-hop dance of the group led by Maria. For the entertainment of the audience, Class 11 had produced a video, which showed quite creative descriptions of each of the eleven graduates, followed by a short clip of a "first of its kind Flash Mob at the GSN", presented by Class 12.

To conclude the ceremony, all the guests were invited to clink glasses with the graduating students, before the latter left to carry on their celebrations at the Mayfair Hotel in Westlands.
