Our study and counseling trip to Kirchheim unter Teck

Date 22/01/2015

Upon arrival in Stuttgart on Wednesday, 3rd December, we were all prepared for the cold and the promised snow during the weekend. We were also ready for two weeks filled with university visits, career choice seminars, and getting to know the country a little better - especially since none of us has lived in Germany for more than four years.

But first, we were met by our host families at the airport and spent the rest of the day getting to know them.

Over the next days, we visited a number of universities from University of Hohenheim and University of Mannheim to University of Applied Sciences of Reutlingen. A favorite amongst most of us was Germany's oldest university, University of Heidelberg.

However not just the university, but also the beautiful and historical city enchanted us. To make the visit even better, we got to meet Susie Soloch, a former intern of the German School Nairobi.

The visit to the “Bundesagentur für Arbeit” (Federal Agency for Employment) was extremely worthwhile and informative to say the least, as we got an overview of the Abitur, possibilities of a gap year and German universities. Our trip was however not confined to Germany: we were also in Strasbourg, the “capital of Christmas”, for two days. Here, we had the opportunity to practice our French.

On the last day at Ludwig-Uhland-Gymnasium, our host school, we prepared Kenyan dishes such as ugali, mandazis and chapatis, which we then sold to the students there. On our last evening, we presented Kenya and the German School Nairobi to our host families and the friends we had made in the two weeks.

All in all, we enjoyed the fourteen days in Germany despite the lack of snow. We have now been able to start or continue narrowing down our plans for the future, we made new friends and we experienced numerous things, which are definitely memories worth remembering.
